For the longest time I didn’t care for blue cheese. At all. It smelled funny and it was chunky, and funky. My parents loved it, but you couldn’t talk any of us kids into trying it. Give us French dressing or nothing! hahaha Fast forward many years. I’ve come to embrace the funk of stinky cheeses and enjoy them, especially when I can make the best blue cheese dressing at home.
Oddly enough I came across the recipe in post about sweet potato chips. Tracey of The Kitchen Is My Playground was lamenting how her sweet potato chips didn’t turn out the way she’d hoped but the blue cheese dressing was awesome. (I had a similar fail with beet and carrot chips).
The dressing also works as a dip and is worth buying a small pack (3 – 4 ounces) of good quality blue cheese. That’s a stilton in the photo above, you might prefer gorgonzola or roquefort or whatever is in the dairy case. Just buy it in a chunk instead of crumbles.
What can you dip into the best blue cheese dressing?
I breaded and fried some mushroom caps for the photos. It’s also good with celery, chicken wings, broccoli florets, chips and roasted wedges of root veggies (carrots, potatoes, sweet potatoes, beets).
The recipe couldn’t be simpler and it’s easy to scale up to serve at a party.
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 3/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1/2 medium onion peeled and grated on the fine holes of a box grater
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1/2 regular lemon
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire Sauce or more, to taste
- freshly ground black pepper to taste
- 3 to 4 ounces blue cheese about 100 grams in a block
Instructions
- Combine all the ingredients except for the blue cheese in a bowl and stir to combine. Taste and adjust the pepper and Worcestershire sauce as desired.
- Crumble the blue cheese into the mix and gently fold it all together.
- Transfer to a covered container and store for a couple hours before serving.
- The dressing will keep for a week or so in the fridge.
Where we live in Spain they spread blue cheese dressing on a bocadillo of pork loin in such quantities you have to lean over the plate to catch all the drippings. We love that sandwich, needless to say. I can’t help but think this dressing would only improve it!
Try this blue cheese dressing with these pork tenderloin and orange toasts.

I’m a total blue cheese junky! I can’t wait to try this, sounds wonderful.
Erlene
What?! I had no idea that blue cheese was so easy to make from scratch! Pinned and will have to try this since I love stinky blue cheese.
Roseann Hampton
Looks delicious – I used to love adding it to steaks!
LydiaF
That’s a great idea. Someone else brought up burgers, too. Tasty!
maria
Yummy, love to try this on my salad.
Kelli
It’s funny how you assume something is complicated to make and then discover it’s something you could easily make yourself. Am the only one in my family who loves blue cheese dressing. Often use it as a dip too so this recipe would go a long ways and save me some money I bet. I especially love blue bacon burgers with Jalapenos. Can’t wait to try this!
Ali Biorn
My family loves blue cheese ~ wings, veggies, salad, Ritz crackers. I’ve never tried to make my own though. I’ll definitely be using this recipe!
Habiba
I must admit I won’t ever touch blue cheese, lol. But I do love goat cheese and I totally think this dressing could be whipped up with this alternative, too, right?
LydiaF
I was thinking this would work well with feta cheese, too. So yes, use your favorite goat cheese.
Cherryl Ehlenburg
I am not a blue cheese fan, but my husband has always loved the homemade kind. I will have to try this on him!
Susan
I’m not a big , but my Cheesehead husband sure is. I’ll forward this on for him to make some weekend when I’m out of town!
LydiaF
Good idea! hahaha

Love blue cheese! Such a neat flavor. And blue cheese dressing — or dip! — is wonderful stuff. This looks really good — thanks.
Kristie
That sure looks good. What’s the best thing to dip it in?
LydiaF
It depends. Some chips are good, but not something highly seasoned like BBQ chips or Doritos. I like to dip veggies like celery and red pepper.
Mother of 3
I often think I enjoy blue cheese… but so far I just can not get past the actual taste of it I’m afraid. I do love sweet potatoes though and never though to combine the two tastes.
LydiaF
It’s definitely stronger tasting off the block than in some sort of sauce or mixed with cream cheese.
Jenny
This made me laugh because my husband puts blue cheese crumble on top of his salad and the kids always tell him it smells. Pinning to give this recipe a try. We love blue cheese at our house.
LydiaF
Thanks, Jenny! Hope you all enjoy it.
