Life is too short to not have chocolate. And easy chocolate mousse is one of the most sublime ways to enjoy it. Once you try this simple recipe you’ll Go Boxless and shun the store bought stuff forever.
Traditional chocolate mousse is made with eggs in an involved process that can be intimidating. Our mousse uses freshly whipped cream and melted chocolate and is almost guaranteed to be delicious.
You’ll need semi-sweet or bittersweet chocolate for this mousse. I used a bar with more than 70% cocoa, but semi-sweet chips can also be used. If using a bar, chop it into smaller pieces to help it melt more quickly.
It’s easy to burn chocolate in the microwave so I prefer to melt it in a heat proof bowl over gently simmering water as shown in the photo below.
Make sure to buy heavy cream or whipping cream and store it in the coldest part of the refrigerator for best results.
This recipe makes enough easy chocolate mousse for three or four servings. Feel free to garnish with more whipped cream, chopped nuts or berries as desired.
Ingredients:
- 4 ounces dark chocolate (100 gram bar is fine), chopped
- 2 tablespoons butter, cut into small pieces
- pinch salt (optional)
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 tablespoons sugar (okay to add more if you prefer)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
Method:
- Melt the chocolate, butter and a pinch of salt until smooth.
- Meanwhile, use a mixer to whip the cream with the sugar and vanilla until soft peaks form.
- Remove the melted chocolate from the heat and fold in the whipped cream. Use a spatula to help scrap the chocolate from the bottom of the bowl. Be gentle and continue to fold. Eventually it will turn a yummy dark color and mix together.
- Spoon into bowls or ramekins.
- Serve right away or store in the fridge until ready.
- Garnish as desired before serving.
Too easy. I should make this every week…

Hi Christina, I hope you get a chance to make it. I used a lesser amount of sugar and it was still very sweet to me. I’m sure you all will enjoy it!
